Bicycle Transportation Alliance
Alice Awards & Auction

May 4 • 5 p.m.

In the design world, and in life, we love a good collaboration. This time it's the venerable rug maker Atelier Lapchi in Portland, Oregon, and architect Rick Postestio creating a carpet for a good cause. On May 4th, Bicycle Transportation Alliance will hold their Alice Awards & Auction, and this dynamic custom design will be up on the block. It is a symmetrical, deconstructed bike design with repeating chains and gears around the border. Who knew metal parts could made such a poetic pattern? The lucky winner will get to choose their colors from among Lapchi's endless array of options. We love when beauty and industry come together, and especially when they do so for a good cause

Design: Rick Potestio, AIA
Rug: Lapchi, handmade, custom dyed Tibetan wool carpet, 5'x7', 100 knots per square inch quality. Retail value: $3,200

>>  BTA Alice Awards & Auction, at Pure Space,
1315 N.W. Overton St., Portland. RSVP to Atelier Lapchi, (503) 719-6589

Zoom. Italian Design and the
Photography of Aldo and Marirosa Ballo

Now through June 16

You may not realize it, but your love for modern Italian design was probably influenced by two individuals: photographers Aldo and Marirosa Ballo. The husband-and-wife team photographed all the big names (Kartell, Artemide, Alessi, Pesce, Sottsass) in the latter half of the 20th century, and their iconic images contributed to the heydey of Italian design. The exhibition of the Ballo’s images, on view through June 16 at BAM, explores the relationship between object, image media, and marketing.

Driscoll Robbins

In March, after 15 years at its first location, the Driscoll Robbins showroom moved kitty-corner from its old home. It’s appropriate that the rugs are displayed like art in a gallery, because the eponymous shop owner wants them to not only work in your home now but be heirlooms for the next generation.
